U.S. Bank's Darrell Brown Honored with Philanthropic Leadership Award by Inner-City Arts in Los Angeles

Brown believes artistic development is essential in creating future entrepreneurs

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Darrell Brown, senior vice president of consumer banking at U.S. Bank in Los Angeles, was honored with the Philanthropic Leadership Award from Inner-City Arts at the organization's Imagine Awards Gala at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on October 17.

Brown is a native of Los Angeles and 37-year veteran of banking in the Los Angeles area, who has led consumer banking at U.S. Bank since 2003. An ardent advocate of local nonprofits, Brown says businesses depend on a workforce with employees who are steeped in the arts.

"We have to do more to develop the right brain. That's where our future entrepreneurs come from," Brown said. "At Inner-City Arts, you see kids creating sculpture, working in 3D animation or choreographing dance. What they do directly relates to math, geometry and fractions. It's that kind of mind - one that combines art and engineering - that will develop the next smart phone, or electric car or whatever will be the next great innovation that drives our economy forward."

Inner-City Arts is a vibrant arts education campus that the organization describes as an oasis of learning, achievement and creativity for at-risk children in the heart of Skid Row. The organization says students who attend their classes show dramatic increases in statewide standardized test scores: 25 percent in math, 17 percent in reading, 8 percent in English proficiency.

"These kids are learning skills that are highly valued in the 21st century workforce, such as collaboration, and creative and conceptual thinking," said Joseph Collins, president and chief executive officer of Inner-City Arts. "Most importantly, students who receive education in the arts are able to create a whole new vision of self, a new world of hope that includes accomplishment and belonging.

Throughout his career, Brown has been recognized for his leadership in the community. He has been honored by organizations including the American Diabetes Association, which named him Father of the Year in 2003; the California Legislative Black Caucus, which gave him their 2009 Leadership Award and the West Angeles Community Development Corporation, which named Brown an Outstanding Corporate Citizen. Brown is especially concerned with sectors of the community that are underserved and need empowerment, as well as those that focus on children and youth. He actively serves on the boards of the Urban League of Los Angeles, Junior Achievement, Valley Industrial Commerce Association, Los Angeles Opportunities Industrialization Centers (LAOIC) and The Economic Alliance.
