Low-Maintenance Lip Color

Low-Maintenance Lip Color

Bold lip color might work for grandmas or the ladies of Mad Men, but the effort can be too much for real life. For those who have better things to do than touch up lipstick all day, the latest beauty trend of no-lipstick lipsticks have come to the rescue.

These balms and tints offer just a hint of pigment, so even the most color-phobic can rock the season’s hottest hues of coral, pink, and berry. Plus with added benefits like hydration and sun protection, the following lipsticks and balms should be categorized as health and beauty essentials.

What Shade Are You?

To pick the best hue to flatter your skin tone, take a look at your bare lips. “If you go to that color family and then play with the tints and tones in that range, it will always work,” says Jenn Karsten, director of education for Make Up For Ever.

As a general guideline, corals and roses look best on light to medium skin tones, pinky browns and plums work on medium to deeper olive skin tones, and wines and mochas look great on darker skin tones, Karsten says.

To give the sheer formulas more staying power, Karsten suggests applying a colorless lip primer (Try Simply Vera: Vera Wang Lip Primer $32.50) or filling in your lips with a matching pencil before putting on your lip color.

Clinique Chubby Sticks

These Crayon-shaped balms are available in 12 delicious shades worthy of a Crayola box. Whether you go for a more traditional hue like the red Super Strawberry or venture out with the more adventurous purple Voluptuous Violet, each Chubby Stick ($16) leaves just a hint of color (but lots of shine). A blend of shea butter, mango-seed butter, and jojoba-seed oil nourishes the delicate skin, so you can feel good about coloring your lips.

Revlon Lip Butter

The classic packaging may make Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter ($7.49) appear to be a lipstick, but with a mix of mango, shea, and coconut butters, it offers more hydration than your typical lip color. Each of the 20 sheer shades has a mouthwatering name (Cotton Candy, Creamsicle, and Fig Jam) and glides on so smoothly that it’s easy to understand why they’re called “butters.”

Kjaer Weis Lip Tint

The luxe Kjaer Weis Lip Tint ($48) was born out of necessity when makeup artist Kirsten Kjaer Weis couldn’t find that perfect shade to enhance natural lip color. “I like the lips to look modern, not overly lipstick-y; moist, not shiny,” Weis says. The result is a collection of six colors that are meant to subtly amp up lip color for an effortless look.

When you’ve used up the product, spring for a refill ($24) to pop into the sleek metal packaging.

L'Oreal Colour Riche Balm

If lip gloss isn’t for you, try Colour Riche Balm ($7.95), which comes in eight shades including rose, plum, and coral. Each offers SPF 15 and provides a sheer wash of color and a matte finish. Thanks to the balm’s blend of shea butter, argan oil, and vitamin E, you can expect hours of soft lips.

Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist

Although the Rouge Artist collection ($19) looks just like a standard lipstick, the pigment goes on so sheer that you’re left with the perfect amount of color. Choose from three finishes (iridescent, satin, or matte). If you want more of a dramatic look, apply the shade over your favorite lipstick.

Fresh Sugar Coral Lip Treatment

Fresh one-ups its cult favorite with the new Sugar Coral Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15 ($22.50). The perfect-for-summer shade still has the mouthwatering sweet citrus scent as the other Sugar Lip Treatments, but this version leaves a hint of peachy color on your lips. Ingredients including avocado oil, vitamin A, and beeswax keep lips pillowy soft, and carnauba wax seals in moisture to prevent dehydration.

Dior Addict Lip Glow

The one-shade-fits-all Dior Addict Lip Glow Sheer Lip Balm SPF 10 ($28) goes on sheer, but then its Color Reviver technology reacts with your body’s chemistry for your own custom color: like a mood ring for your lips. Mango butter hydrates lips, while loofah extract smooths them.

Burt's Bees Shimmers

Secret Agent Beauty Foreign-Intelligence Flirt

One swipe of Secret Agent Beauty Foreign-Intelligent Flirt lip gloss ($16) leaves lips tingling and appearing fuller with the help of peppermint-oil extract and menthol. Hydrating sacha-inchi oil nourishes lips with omega fatty acids and vitamins A and E. Wear it alone for a super-shiny, slightly pink finish, or with your go-to lip color for a glossier look.

Korres Lip Butter

Available in seven shades, the colorful pots of Korres Lip Butters ($12) may remind you of finger paints; but, unlike the childhood arts and crafts that left lasting stains on your parent’s sofa, these provide a welcomed sheer wash of color. Shea butter and rice wax help hydrate the lips, while guava provides a healthy boost of antioxidants.
