athenahealth's Second Annual 'More Disruption Please' Conference Convenes CEOs, Entrepreneurs, Physicians, Academics, and Software Engineers

Survey of CEOs Reveals 58% believe access to customers and their input is the most valuable resource for an entrepreneur in health care or otherwise

WATERTOWN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- athenahealth, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATHN) , a leading provider of cloud-based practice management, electronic health record (EHR), and care coordination services to medical groups, today provided highlights from their second annual More Disruption Please (MDP) Conference. The event is an integral part of athenahealth's broader More Disruption Please program, the aim of which is to accelerate disruptive innovation in health care by fostering a community of forward-thinking "disruptors."

Over the course of the two-day event at the Point Lookout Resort in Northport, Maine, more than 100 'disruptors'— CEOs of health care IT (HIT) companies, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, academics, and software engineers—gathered to discuss ways to drive the industry towards more openness, innovation, and collaboration. Keynotes were delivered by Charlie Baker, Entrepreneur in Residence at General Catalyst Partners, former Republican nominee for Massachusetts Governor, and former CEO of Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, and Marty Anderson, Senior Lecturer in Management at Babson College.

From the group of 55 attending CEOs, 30 were invited to participate in an MDP "elevator pitch" contest in which each gave a two-minute explanation of why their company matters in health care. Semi-finalists Entrada, iTriage, Epion, Wellframe, and Healthfinch were selected by the entire MDP group and then given 10 minutes to deliver their sales pitch to more than 2,000 athenahealth clients (mainly physicians) via a live webinar. iTriage was declared the winner and will have the opportunity to pilot and then scale their services to athenahealth's base of over 35,000 providers through athenaNet®, athenahealth's cloud-based network.

athenahealth also conducted a survey during the event, asking 55 CEOs in attendance their opinions on various issues in health care:

  • 35 percent believe that the Government has the most power to influence change in health care
  • Yet, 51 percent believe that it's the Government that most stifles innovation in health care
  • 45 percent find that care coordination and clinical integration are the areas in most need of innovation-driven advancement
  • The Affordable Care Act and ICD-10 were cited as the biggest pains for health care provider organizations in the coming year (38 percent and 36 percent, respectively)
  • 58 percentbelieve that access to customers and their input is the most valuable resource for an entrepreneur in health care or otherwise
