Most iOS word games are either variations on Scrabble or Bookworm, offering you a chance to compete against friends or compete against a clock or other obstacles while you show off your vocabulary. Xether Lab has released something altogether different, but still incredibly entertaining, with Frankenword on iPhone and iPad.

This free-to-play word game is a solo experience, giving you two clues for words that must be combined into one larger word (the frankenword). The frankenword doesn't need to make sense, but when combined, will allow you to still read the two original words buried within. For instance, for the two clues "Warning Device" and "Mammal with Armor," the frankenword would be "Alarmadillo," which is a combination of the words "Alarm" and "Armadillo." Unfortunately, Frankenword is one experience that works better the longer you play it, as there is a bit of a learning curve present here.

If you ever have trouble guessing a word, you can use your hints to fill in a few letters for you, nudging you in the right direction. These hints will eventually run out, but you can earn more by sharing correct words on either Twitter or Facebook.

As of right now, there are 50 words to guess in the first stage of the game, and the next free stage will unlock on August 1. If that's not soon enough for you, you can also purchase other word packs individually or in bulk. For the record, unlocking the entire experience is just $2.99, if you happen to like the game as much as we do.

Frankenword will likely be upgraded in the future to contain even more free and paid word lists, so this is one game that should earn a semi-permanent space on your favorite iOS device. If you're interested in trying the game out for yourself, you can now do so for free on iTunes.
