SodaStream Is Hotter Than This Summer

SodaStream (NAS: SODA) is apparently a hit with the stateside masses.

It's been nearly two years since the Israeli company made a big push to expand the popularity of its home-based soda-making system in the U.S., but it wasn't until just a few weeks ago that Wal-Mart (NYS: WMT) began stocking the company's starter kit, carbonators, and flavor syrups.

It's apparently going pretty well.

Monness, Crespi, Hardt & Co. issued a bullish analyst note yesterday, indicating that its products are flying off the shelves at the world's largest retailer.

Channel checks show that the number of Wal-Mart locations that are either selling out or have a limited number of the $80 starter kits has been growing over the past couple of weeks.

The value proposition of making soda at home through SodaStream isn't as strong as the product's convenience, wellness, and environmental benefits. However, just as Green Mountain Coffee Roasters' (NAS: GMCR) Keurig single-cup coffeemaker has shown that consumers aren't afraid of making a big one-time investment to save money on future beverage purchases, SodaStream is proving that it's not just another kitchen appliance fad.

In another piece of welcome news, Monness, Crespi, Hardt & Co.'s report also indicates that Kraft Foods' (NYS: KFT) new Crystal Light flavored teas and Country Time lemonade -- packaged as SodaStream syrups -- are also selling briskly. If other major brands of soft drinks, energy drinks, or beverages were waiting to see how Kraft does before partnering with SodaStream on the flavored syrups, the coast appears to be clear.

As temperatures heat up, it isn't a surprise to see SodaStream as a big winner of this past weekend's Father's Day gifting process. With broader availability of its advantageous product, it's shaping up to be a good summer for SodaStream.
