Sirius XM's Revolving Door of Content Is a Hit
Fans of The Beach Boys or Luther Vandross may want to keep their Sirius XM Radio (NAS: SIRI) subscriptions active.
Luther Radio will launch on Friday, airing music from his 13 albums alongside rarities, old concert clips, and archival interviews.
The Beach Boys are set to perform a concert tomorrow that will be recorded for next month's Beach Boys Endless Summer Weekend on Sirius XM.
Blink and you'll miss either satellite radio channel. Luther Radio and Beach Boys Endless Summer Weekend will only be on the air for four days. Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, and Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Radio may have permanent homes at Sirius XM, but other musical superstars are passing guests.
You probably missed it, but Gregg Allman had a special question and answer session as part of Sirius XM's Town Hall series last night.
It ultimately works for both Sirius XM and most of the artists with promotional intentions. The Beach Boys have a summer concert series to promote. Allman has a new book. Sirius XM proves that radio can do what Pandora Media (NYS: P) cannot in serving up newsworthy content.
Sure, Pandora playlists can honor particular artists, but the event-driven nature of a few days of programmed content that everyone enjoys at the same time has more allure than on-demand streams.
Once again, this is Sirius XM flexing its muscles. Premium radio attracts the well-to-do audiences that would likely be paying big bucks to catch The Beach Boys this summer or read Allman's book.
Major artists gravitating to a Pandora event would have the same kind of weight. Sure, Clear Channel (NasdaqOTH: CCMO.PK) had a star-studded lineup in Las Vegas last year to promote the relaunch of its iHeartRadio app, but that's really the exception to the rule. The coast-to-coast coverage of individual Sirius XM channels and the paying audience will continue to make the platform the top choice for artists with shows and music to promote.
