Polycom (NAS: PLCM) reported earnings on Jan. 23. Here are the numbers you need to know.

The 10-second takeaway
For the quarter ended Dec. 31 (Q4), Polycom beat slightly on revenues and crushed expectations on earnings per share.

Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue grew significantly, and earnings per share increased significantly.

Margins grew across the board.

Revenue details
Polycom reported revenue of $407 million. The 15 analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ anticipated net sales of $401 million. Sales were 20% higher than the prior-year quarter's $340 million.

EPS details
Non-GAAP EPS came in at $0.41. The 18 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ averaged $0.29 per share on the same basis. GAAP EPS of $0.28 for Q4 were 48% higher than the prior-year quarter's $0.19 per share.

Margin details
For the quarter, gross margin was 60.0%, 20 basis points better than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 12.4%, 20 basis points better than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 12.2%, 240 basis points better than the prior-year quarter.

Looking ahead
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $399 million. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.29.

Next year's average estimate for revenue is $1.7 billion. The average EPS estimate is $1.28.

Investor sentiment
The stock has a three-star rating (out of five) at Motley Fool CAPS, with 196 members out of 217 rating the stock outperform, and 21 members rating it underperform. Among 82 CAPS All-Star picks (recommendations by the highest-ranked CAPS members), 76 give Polycom a green thumbs-up, and six give it a red thumbs-down.
