What Are Employers Really Looking For?

It's the age-old question: what are employers really looking for? You may wrestle with this thought as you send out countless resumes, requests, e-mails, or phone calls. After all, those on the other side of the table can be a little one-sided and mysterious. Plus, with many employers failing to get back to you in a reasonable time frame, you could get a little frustrated. Are they just not that into you, or do they love to keep you hanging?

Instead of driving yourself crazy, try to focus on what employers are really looking for, then cater your submission as such. Check out these tips to keep yourself in the right mind:


Read the job description properly

It seems easy enough. Read the job description then alter your resume or application to make sure you're a more attractive candidate. It's not a hard concept: employers want candidates who meet all the requirements listed in the job description. So, if you don't meet those requirements, you probably won't get a call back, especially if the employer is using an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to filter out candidates. If you do meet their requirements, make it painstakingly obvious that this is the case. That way, the employer can be sure that you're an applicant to watch, and you'll be more likely to get your application past the ATS into an employers hands.


Check out what other people are saying

Not sure if your application is catered just right? Check out what other people are saying about the company or the employer. A quick Google or social networking search can reveal a lot about a person; the same goes for the employer. Past employees, current workers, or even those who have experience applying to the employer can give you the insight you need to apply effectively.


Don't over think it

Understandably, the job search is a stressful time for job seekers. Ultimately, your entire professional career is at stake, so it can be easy to over think the situation. But, try not to. Don't look at applying as anything other than what it is. It's incredibly easy to analyze a question or requirement until you've dissected it to mean the complete opposite of its core message. So, look at applying on its surface and don't complicate it. Remember, employers are looking for simplicity too. Don't overload them with unnecessary measures.
