What NOT To Wear For Your Virtual Interview (But Please Wear Something)

Selecting your outfit for a video interview doesn't have to feel like you are about to appear on an episode of TLC's What Not to Wear. The key takeaway is to essentially select the same type of attire you would select for a face-to-face interview, but with a twist. Media experts recommend the following capture the best you on camera:
- Avoid white: Whites are brighter on camera and may overpower your face, making eye contact virtually impossible. Colors that look best on camera include deep colors such as navy, and solids should always be selected over prints.
- Draw the shades: Sunlight shining through a window is equally as distracting as bright wearing bright colors or a printed shirt.
- Silence your phone: Leaving your phone on during an interview is almost as bad as leaving it on in at a movie theater. The last thing you want to do is be scrambling to turn it off during your interview. Be sure to silence or turn it off just as you would if you were meeting in person.
- Avoid distracting jewelry or other accessories: One of the key accessories for the summer or if you live in the South is a pair of sunglasses. Make sure you take them off your head before joining in a video interview. (They do not count as an accessory!) Wear minimal jewelry and stay away from anything too shiny that might catch the light on camera.
- Know your audience: Choose your interview attire just as you would if you were meeting your interviewer in-person. If you aren't sure what to wear, use this guide as a reference.
- Pay attention to your background: Try to sit in front of a plain wall without family photos, posters, or other distractions in the shot.
- The basics still apply: For men, this includes a fresh shave, and for women this includes conservative makeup.
