Is All Student/Teacher Sex Wrong? An Interesting Argument...or Not

Before you go, we thought you'd like these...

Are there any conditions under which it would be OK for a student to have sex with a teacher? Your first impression might be, "No way! Never!" But what if the student is over 18 and didn't attend the teacher's classes -- didn't even attend the teacher's school?

Robert Lange, a popular social studies teacher at Williams High in Plano, Texas, is hoping those factors will win the day for him, and that he'll be able to legally teach again soon. Lange, who has had a Texas teaching certificate since 1979, had his teaching credentials revoked by the State Board because he had sex with a student during winter break.

But it's a lot more complicated than that: Lange says the student was 18 and the encounters were consensual. Also, it's been established that he wasn't her teacher and she didn't even attend school in the same district -- or the same county. Lange had never taught in the Mesquite Independent School District, where the student, identified only as "CS" was enrolled as a senior. Granted, he had to be at least 20 to 25 years older than CS then, but that doesn't make it illegal.

Lange has filed a complaint with the state board of education in Travis County District Court, hoping that they'll allow him to teach again. The Dallas Observer published the following excerpt from Lange's complaint:

"The sexual encounters did not occur on school property. They occurred in a martial arts studio on private property. The sexual encounters did not occur during school time. They occurred in late December and early January when school was not in session. The sexual encounters did not occur directly or indirectly within the context of any school activity. CS received no extra credit for her participation in the martial arts program. At the time of the sexual encounters in question, CS was an adult, 18 years of age, acting on her own volition, admittedly instigating the two sexual encounters."

Lange is not denying the sexual encounters, but he is claiming that they were legal, and didn't breach the district code of ethics. How do you feel about this issue? Feel free to weigh in below.
