House of the Day: Built for Architectural Digest's Founder

Before you go, we thought you'd like these...

Talk about working for a tough crowd. Yowsa! This 6,551-square-foot home, listed at $26.5 million in tony Del Mar, Calif., was built by famed architect Bob Ray Offenhauser for Colleen Knapp, the founder of Architectural Digest. It's considered the premier beachfront home in this North San Diego County community, which hasn't stopped its price from melting away like a snowman on the first day of spring.

It was listed in 2010 for $50 million -- for reasons that elude us (no offense intended to a house with 500-year-old windows imported from France) -- and then later dropped to $39 million.

The home has five bedroom suites, a media room, two-story formal salon, a dramatic high-concept gourmet kitchen, gym and private saltwater pool and spa. There is a detached guest apartment with a kitchenette. It was built in 1984 and upgraded by the current owner, who added antique imported French fireplace mantels.

Seth Hethcock of Willis Allen Real Estate has the listing.
