Oink at Classmate A Tennessee teacher was suspended for having the kindergartners in her class surround a fellow student, call him names and squeal like a pig. Apparently, Debbie Hayes, who had been teaching in Roane County for 38 years, was fed up with the student's messy work space.

The Knox News reports that another educator walked into Hayes' classroom and saw kindergartners circled around the crying boy, while oinking, making other pig noises and calling him a pig.

The incident was reported to the principal, who met with Hayes that day. A report from that meeting says that Hayes told the student, "Your area looks like a pig sty. Oink. Oink." She said she didn't realize the other students were taunting him, but agreed that the behavior was inappropriate.

Dr. Toni H. McGriff, director of Roane County Schools, called the incident "simply unbelievable," and wrote in her reprimand letter that she was "appalled with the actions in this situation.'' She stated, "It's a black eye on the profession,'' and "It's a black eye on our schools.''

Hayes was suspended for one day, and asked to apologize to the class. Meanwhile, the parents of the student who was taunted were asked if they would like to transfer the boy to another class, but they declined.
