canada now hiring If you're frustrated with your job prospects here in the United States, you might consider making a run for the border to the north. Canadian experts are predicting severe labor shortages, especially in the information, communication and technology (ICT) sector.

A new report, the Outlook for Human Resources in the ICT Labour Market by the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC), shows that in most regions in Canada and for most ICT occupations, demand will far exceed supply. Workers with five or more years' experience in this field are in particular demand. There is also a shortage of workers with leading edge skills in marketing, accounting and finance.

Over the next five years, it's estimated that Canadian employers will need to hire at least 106,000 ICT workers. They're looking for workers with skill package -- for example, systems analysis and design combined with marketing, operations management and HR management; or people with particular combinations of domain experience (such as e-health, e-finance and digital media) together with ICT expertise.

It's especially a good time for women and recent grads who are looking for work. The report shows that males make up approximately 75 percent of all ICT employees, and there just aren't enough qualified females to recruit. Also, recent graduates with co-op or internships as part of their education will, for the most part, be able to obtain relevant employment.

"The potential skills and labor shortage crisis has been identified as one of the most defining issues facing the ICT sector in Canada today," said Bernard Courtois, president and CEO of the Information Technology Association of Canada (ITAC). "Global job mobility, technological change, demographics, declining enrollments, and shifting investment patterns have combined to create a pending shortfall among skilled ICT workers."
