The Mexican Navy has been searching for a female crew member from the Disney Wonder who went missing on a Mexican Riviera cruise this week. The FBI is also investigating.

"The crew member failed to report for a scheduled shift and we began a thorough search onboard," Disney Cruise Line spokeswoman Christi Erwin Donnan tells AOL Travel News.

"Given the circumstances we are very concerned about this situation and are doing everything possible to assist with the search effort and investigation," the cruise line says in a statement.

Disney says it contacted the Mexican Navy, the FBI and the Bahamian Maritime Authority, which is leading the investigation. The 2,400-passenger ship is registered in the Bahamas.

Passengers on the Disney Wonder posted the news of the missing crew member on a Disney forum. There were reports the crew member worked in the ship's youth program.

Erwin Donnan declined to give further details on the crew member "out of respect for the family."

The ship left Los Angeles on Sunday, and had been at sea for two days on its way to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, when the crew member disappeared. The Disney Wonder leaves Cabo San Lucas today to return to Los Angeles.

Homeported in Port Canaveral, near Orlando, the 2,400-passenger Disney Wonder is spending the season doing weeklong Mexican Riviera sailings, calling at the two ports. The cruise line dropped plans to also visit Mazatlan, Mexico out of safety concerns.
