job interview So it was after class, and it was voluntary. Some might argue it was nothing more than a presentation for a human sexuality class. Nevertheless, Northwestern University Professor John Michael Bailey is in a boatload of trouble for an extracurricular sex-toy demonstration presented in his classroom, and he's being vilified by the press and investigated by university authorities.

The controversial demonstration involved a couple bringing a large, electric phallic sex toy to class, according to reports. The woman removed her clothes and energetically used the device. Bailey says the demonstration was not objectionable because it took place after class, was optional for the 600 students in his class, and was relevant to the subject he was teaching.

Bailey issued a statement that read, "After all, those still there had stayed for an optional demonstration/lecture about kinky sex and were told explicitly what they were about to see. The demonstration, which included a woman who enjoyed providing a sexually explicit demonstration using a machine, surely counts as kinky, and hence as relevant."

"I expect many people to disagree with me. Thoughtful discussion of controversial topics is a cornerstone of learning," Bailey's statement continued.

Apparently, Northwestern University President Morton Schapiro is among those who disagree. He released a statement Thursday saying he was "troubled and disappointed by what occurred," and is launching a school investigation. "Although the incident took place in an after-class session that students were not required to attend and students were advised in advance, several times, of the explicit nature of the activity, I feel it represented extremely poor judgment on the part of our faculty member. I simply do not believe this was appropriate, necessary or in keeping with Northwestern University's academic mission," Schapiro stated.
