job interview A new $5 billion-plus manufacturing plant in Chandler, Ariz., along with increased demand, are sending semiconductor giant Intel on a hiring spree of more than 4,000 workers that should last all the way through 2011.

With more than 15,000 workers in Oregon, Intel is already that state's largest private employer. While many of the new Intel jobs will be in Arizona, a number will be located in Oregon, as well as in New Mexico, where Intel also has a major presence.

The jobs will primarily be in product development and R&D. But the work in Chandler will also involve manufacturing positions. The plant, known as Fab 42, will be the most advanced high-volume semiconductor manufacturing facility in the world, and will result in thousands of jobs, both in terms of temporary construction jobs as well as permanent manufacturing jobs.

"This new factory will play a central role in extending Intel's unquestioned leadership in semiconductor manufacturing," said Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini. "The transistors and chips it will produce will be the most dynamic platform for innovation that our company has ever created. Together they will enable more capable computers, the most advanced consumer electronics and mobile devices, the brains inside the next generation of robotics, and thousands of other applications that have yet to be invented."

It doesn't hurt for a CEO to show a little confidence when he's on the verge of hiring thousands.

Previously, Intel announced plans to spend $6-8 billion over several years to upgrade several existing U.S. factories and build a new development plant in Oregon. These activities, announced in October, would support approximately 6,000-8,000 additional U.S. construction jobs during the building phase and eventually add up to 1,000 high-skilled, high-wage manufacturing jobs.

In case you're not into engineering, manufacturing or software design, there still might be opportunities for you at Intel. There are also positions open in finance, sales and marketing, materials planning and purchasing, human resources, legal and government affairs and support.
