Mickey Mouse is joining the ranks of Fastpass attractions at Magic Kingdom such as Space Mountain. For the first time this spring, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida is going to let guests use a timed pass to meet the iconic mouse.

The change will happen when Mickey moves into a new permanent meet-and-greet location in Town Square. Disney did not disclose an exact date.

Magic Kingdom guests will be able to obtain a Disney Fastpass ticket specifying a one-hour window when they can meet Mickey for hugs, photos and autographs.

Disney says it's the first time it has made the computerized Fastpass service available for a character meet-and-greet at any Disney theme park.

Currently, guests can do the highly popular visit with Mickey Mouse in Tomorrowland, to the right of Space Mountain. Mickey's Toontown Fair, where the character previously met with fans, closed last week to make way for an expansion of Fantasyland.

The new meet-and-greet-location, Town Square Theater, occupies the current Exposition Hall area, which is just inside the Magic Kingdom park entrance. Disney says an extensive redo of the space is already underway.

"This isn't just remodeling Expo Hall; it is completely re-imagining this entire venue as a beautiful Victorian-era theater and the new home for Mickey Mouse," says Jon Georges, Walt Disney Imagineering director and show producer.

The theater will have a marquee with gold-leaf trim and inside the décor includes a mosaic floor, fancy curtains with gold leaf tie-backs and brass chandeliers. There will also be "highly themed" retail shops.

Visitors will queue "backstage," where Mickey will greet them in a space done up like a rehearsal room with posters, steamer trunks and stage props.

The new theater will also host meet-and-greets with Disney Princesses while the Fantasyland construction is underway. The expanded Fantasyland is expected to open in stages beginning in 2012. Meet-and-greet experiences with the Disney Princesses are currently at the Adventureland Verandah.
