Quebec City for Kids
Parents will find a wide variety of things to do in the Québec City area to keep kids both happy and curious. Strolling the streets of Old Québec with its two and three-century old buildings, fort and cannons can even become a fun history lesson. Popular attractions include an aquarium, indoor amusement park and even a colossal toy store. A summer water park transforms into a snow-rafting wonderland in winter. And don't overlook a riverboat ride along the St. Lawrence River for an exciting and scenic family outing.
Village Vacances Valcartier/Québec City
Village Vacances Valcartier
With both a water park and winter activities, Village Vacances Valcartier is a family destination year-round. About 20 miles northwest of Québec City, kids can plunge down 35 waterslides into enchanted rivers, wade through tunnels and dodge 5-foot-high waves in the 300-foot wave pool. They can also go boogie boarding or paddle inflatable canoes or rafts to traverse the Jacques-Cartier River on their own. In winter, Valcartier becomes America's largest winter playground with snow rafting down steep slopes, ice skating and more. A special kids' area features an Ice Castle with tunnels, mazes and snow slides.
Aquarium du Québec
Kids love to marvel at the fish, sharks, turtles and other aquatic life at Québec City's aquarium, located about 30 minutes from Old Québec. Walruses, seals and even polar bears make an appearance during special training and feeding shows. The Aquarium du Québec has nearly 10,000 specimens, including indigenous and exotic fish, amphibians and reptiles. Kids will particularly enjoy touching starfish and other invertebrates. Children can even be an animal keeper for a day with an opportunity to help feed and lead activities for walruses and seals.
Benjo – a Toy Store
This enormous toy store is one of Canada's best! You'll find traditional, original and educational toys-from dolls and stuffed animals to blocks, trains and more. There's a huge candy section. Kids can even make their own toys including stuffed teddy bears, and design their own jewelry and paint pottery in the store's arts and crafts workshops. Children will love riding the in-store train that travels through this wonderful playland.
Méga Parc des Galeries de la Capitale
From bumper cars to a merry-go-round and Ferris wheel, Méga Parc lives up to its name. Located in Eastern Canada's largest commercial mall and complex, this indoor amusement park is the largest in Québec and will thrill kids of all ages. In all, there are 20 major attractions as well as a 17,000-square-foot skating rink. Having a birthday? Méga Parc is a hit for kids' birthday parties.
Old Town Québec City
Strolling through Vieux Québec is fun for the whole family. Its fortresses and medieval-like city walls and gates are reminiscent of a Disney fairytale or Harry Potter movie. Street entertainers perform in city squares and along Upper Town's popular Terrasse Dufferin, with its excellent views and wide boardwalk. With a tour of the adjacent fort, La Citadelle, children can witness the Changing of the Guard ceremony where troops parade in red uniforms and fur hats. There are walking tours along the old city walls. Kids may enjoy browsing through some of the tourist shops and arts and crafts stores along Rue du Petit-Champlain, the city's oldest street.
Musée du Fort
Kids will enjoy Musée du Fort's dioramas with its toy soldiers. A sound and light show highlights six of Québec's 18th century military battles. The most prominent battle is when the British defeated the French in 1759 on the Plains of Abraham. Take an interactive quiz after the 30-minute show using a handheld remote control. Winners receive a prize.
Parc de la Chute Montmorency
From a cruise boat along the St. Lawrence River, Montmorency Falls is a spectacular sight. At 272 feet high, it's more than 100 feet higher than Niagara Falls. The park provides access to excellent viewpoints above the falls from a suspension bridge spanning the river. There are also paths along the base of the falls and a cable car that rides to the top. With the scenery, picnic tables and playgrounds, Montmorency Falls Park makes for a perfect family day trip.
