Vision Airlines' Sale Fare Overwhelms Computers

Vision Airlines, which plans to launch scheduled service to several cities in Florida on March 25, says response to its $49 introductory fares caused its computer servers to crash repeatedly.

The airline also says its reservations center was overwhelmed by calls, resulting in long hold times.

In a press release, Vision says it will extend the introductory fare for another week, to Jan. 31. It was originally set to be pulled off the market on Jan. 23.

Chief operating officer David Meers says the carrier will be making more seats available at the $49 level.

"Many people did not understand that there are a limited number of $49 seats on each flight," he says.

The limited number of sale seats resulted in "scores of disappointed customers," he says.

Formerly known as Vision Air, the airline has operated Grand Canyon tour flights and charter service to various destinations, including Havana, Cuba, for 16 years.

It plans to serve 23 U.S. cities, primarily in the Southeast, connecting them with points in Florida.

Most Florida-bound flights will operate through its hub at Northwest Florida Regional Airport near Destin and may require passengers to change aircraft from a 737 to a regional aircraft.

Vision's normal fares will be in the $89-$199 range each way, not including taxes and fees, which can add about $15 each way.

It also plans to charge first and second checked-bag fees of $15/$20 if paid online or $25/$30 if paid at the airport.
