United Airlines will launch daily nonstop service between Los Angeles International Airport and Guadalajara, Mexico on May 3, subject to Mexican government approval.

The Boeing 737-800 service will be operated by Continental Airlines.

Continental and United merged Oct. 1 and are in the midst of integrating their route networks.

Continental spokeswoman Macky Osorio tells AOL Travel News that the new route brings together two of the combined carrier's strengths: United is the largest airline at Los Angeles, while Continental operates the most flights from the U.S. to Mexico.

In addition, she says, Los Angeles has a large community of Guadalajarans with strong ties to Mexico's second-largest city.

Guadalajara also is the birthplace of major Mexican cultural symbols, such as mariachi music and tequila, and is home to historic architecture and the works of famed mural artist Jose Clemente Orozco.

Continental also operates 38 weekly flights to Guadalajara from its Houston hub.
