When is Spring Break?

Whether you're in school, have kids in school, or not, planning your Spring vacations will revolve around one question: when is Spring Break? Obviously if your travel revolves around a school calendar, this is important information, but even if you have all the flexibility in the world, it will still help you to be aware of the Spring Break schedule. Prices are higher and crowds can be out of control during this brief party season, so you may want to avoid Spring Break travel if you can -- or maybe you're looking to crash a party and pick up a coed. Hey, we won't judge. Here's what you need to know about Spring Break travel.

When is Spring Break - Grade School
A Spring Break vacation with little ones is very different from the type of Spring Break trips you take in college, so it's a good thing that grade school and college Spring Breaks tend to fall about a month apart. Grade school Spring Breaks will vary from school to school and year to year, but they almost always fall either the week before or the week after Easter -- generally any time late March through April. It's still too early to enjoy the beach in most of the US (and you can expect big crowds where it's warmer), but Spring Break is the perfect time to take a family vacation to New York City, or possibly a late-season discount ski trip to Colorado.

When is Spring Break - College
For most universities, Spring Break comes long before Spring -- usually late February or early March. The most popular Spring Break hotspots for college kids are sunny beaches in Florida, Mexico, and California -- expect lots of drinking, skin, random hookups and fake names. If that's not your scene, lots of colleges have Spring Break volunteer programs where you can get a free vacation with some charity-minded buddies in exchange for working on a Habitat for Humanity project. It makes for the kind of Facebook album you won't have to hide from future employers.

When is Spring Break Travel Season?
If you're planning a Spring vacation, but not a Spring Break vacation, you'll save a lot of money and headache by avoiding the typical Spring Break hotspots. Beaches will be crowded and expensive from late February until late April. You might see a dip in prices between the end of Spring Break and the beginning of Summer vacation, so if you want to hit the waves on your Spring vacation, look for something in late April or early May.

On the flip side, you can take advantage of Spring Break travel opportunities even if you're not a student or parent. Lots of amusement parks and other such attractions extend their hours or offer special prices to grab some Spring Break traffic, and the crowds are still much smaller than in the summer.
