The Theatre Development Fund has been helping theatergoers save up to 50 percent on Broadway shows since 1973, and now a new iPhone application will have them saving time, too.

Real-time updates on discount ticket availability will now be available via a handy, easy-to-use iPhone application. Previously, patrons had to visit TKTS booths in order to find out which discount tickets were available for Broadway and Off Broadway shows.

Customers can now view the menu of performances on iPhones before making the journey to one of three booths to purchase tickets. The booths are located under the notorious red steps in Times Square, at the marketplace in South Street Seaport and in at 1 MetroTech Center in downtown Brooklyn. Users will not be able to reserve the tickets, as they are still offered on a first come, first serve basis.

Besides just discount ticket listings, the iPhone application has a few other valuable functions. It allows users to read show descriptions, directly connect to show websites, find theater locations and accessibility information, and flip through TDF Stages, the non-profit organization's online theater magazine.

In conjunction with the new launch, a "Patron Services" team will now be tending to patrons at the TKTS Times Square location.

"TKTS Patron Services Representatives are non-biased, highly trained theater enthusiasts with a passion for customer service. They are educated about the Broadway and Off Broadway season and show business news, and are valued sources of information about the Times Square area," said the Theatre Development Group in a statement.

The team will be equipped with iPads.

The new iPhone application can be downloaded from the iTunes app store or at www.tdf.org/tktsapp. It is available free of charge if you download by March 1. The group is also working on an android version of the application.
