Southwest, Virgin America Launch Winter Fare Sales

Southwest, Virgin America, and AirTran are among airlines that have put their winter fares on sale this week.

The post-holiday winter season is traditionally a slow period for carriers.

Southwest's sale fares are from $59 (in some cases less) for one-way, short-haul flights such as Phoenix to Los Angeles. Baltimore to Denver is sale priced from $99, Chicago to Orlando from $119. The sale runs through Dec. 13. The travel period is Jan. 4 to March 9.

The Virgin America sale is on through Dec. 6, for travel between Dec. 6 and May 11. Sample fares are San Francisco to San Diego from $39, Seattle to LA from $69, and Washington D.C. to LA from $109.

AirTran's "Festivus For The Rest Of Us" 12-day sale serves up deals and destinations that will change daily. The first featured destination: Montego Bay, Jamaica, with sample one-way fares from $114 from Boston, $64 from Orlando and $104 from Detroit. The travel period is Jan. 5 through Feb. 16. The sale runs until Dec. 12.

JetBlue has launched a sale promoting its two additional daily flights between Long Beach, Calif., and Las Vegas. One-way fares are from $19. Tickets must be purchased by Dec. 6, for travel between Dec. 15 and May 16. The new flights start up on Feb. 1.

Alaska Airlines launched a winter sale that includes $50 one-way tickets between Seattle and San Francisco. Fly cross-country from Seattle to Newark from $100. Tickets must be purchased by Dec. 6. The start of the travel period varies by destination, but all flights must be completed by March 10.

For all the airlines, prices don't include government charges and taxes, seats are limited and some blackout dates apply.
