It wasn't perhaps the most fortuitous timing, but the same day as the fire-damaged Carnival Splendor limped back into port in San Diego, Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas, the newest world's largest cruise ship, arrived with great fanfare into Fort Lauderdale.

The $1.5 billion ship was met by a flotilla of maritime escorts including water-spurting fireboats and private watercraft as it arrived at its new homeport of Port Everglades. As it was Veteran's Day, hundreds of onlookers also greeted the vessel by waving U.S. flags from shore.

The 5,400-passenger Allure is a sister ship to the popular, one-year old Oasis of the Seas. Both ships were built in Finland.

The 225,282-ton ships are so big they have neighborhoods. Features include a Boardwalk area with a real carousel and high-diving show, Entertainment Place with an ice rink, open-air Central Park with thousands of real plants and trees and a Pool and Sports Zone with a zip line.

Allure of the Seas also debuts new offerings including appearances by DreamWorks characters (Shrek, Fiona, et al) and the first Starbucks at sea.

The new ship officially begins its roster of Caribbean cruises on Dec. 1.
