Celebrity Hotel Scandals

Just after 2AM on Tuesday, October 26, 2010, police were called to Charlie Sheen's suite at The Plaza after the hotel's front desk was alerted that the actor went berserk. Police discovered an irate Sheen reportedly naked, drunk, and incoherent. The tables and chairs had been thrown, the chandelier was damaged -- to the tune of $7000. Meanwhile, 22-year-old porn star Christina Walsh (a.k.a. Capri Anderson), who had dined with a party that included Sheen and his ex-wife Denise Richards that night, was also present and terrified. No stranger to high drama, the hotel was key player in the scandal of 1950s. Debbie Reynolds discovered that her husband was carrying on a tryst with her good friend Elizabeth Taylor at the landmark property.

According to reports, Tiger Woods often found gal pals at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino. It has been said that when visiting the MGM Grand with pal Charles Barkley, the seemingly clean-cut Woods transformed into a drinking, cigar smoking, hard partying lothario. He had his bodyguard approach females to ask them to visit the golfer at his blackjack table, where Woods played $25,000 hands. In fact, after dancing the night away, he and Jaimee Grubbs (mistress #2) went back to his $3,000-a-night hotel suite. A 31-month affair ensued and sexy text messages were ultimately released.

On January 13, 1998, just days after Monica Lewinsky denied having sexual relations with President Bill Clinton in a sworn affidavit, she met with confidante Linda Tripp at the bar of the Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City. Lewinsky openly discussed her presidential affair. Meanwhile, Tripp, who had secretly tapped their phone conversations for months, wore a body wire to their rendezvous. Three days later, Tripp lured Lewinisky to meet again at a mall food court near the Ritz. The 24-year-old discovered Tripp with two FBI agents. Lewinsky was taken to the hotel's room 1012 and was interrogated in the suite for more than nine hours.

A Columbia Pictures titan once advised actors William Holden and Glenn Ford, "if you must get in trouble, do it at the Chateau Marmont." Indeed, the Castle on the Hill may very well be the granddaddy of scandal. Even in 1933, it was said that Jean Harlow carried on a sultry affair with Clark Gable there while on her honeymoon with another fella. During the 1970s, Led Zeppelin was found racing with motorcycles down the hallways. John Belushi died from an overdose in Bungalow 3. And later, Lindsay Lohan (who once lived in a suite at the hideaway) made the place her post-rehab haunt.

On February 13, 2008, married New York Governor Eliot Spitzer checked into corner suite 871 on the club floor at the elegant Mayflower Renaissance Hotel. It was here that Client Number 9 got a visit from Kristen (a.k.a. Ashley Dupre), a 22-year-old, $1,000-an-hour escort. The escapade would cause disgraced Spitzer to ultimately resign. And the 871 door plaque on "the Spitzer Suite" was stolen yet soon replaced. It wasn't the first time the hotel garnered attention for a political scandal. The place was the setting of the infamous 1996 photo of Monica Lewinsky hugging President Bill Clinton during a campaign event held there.

To promote Cinderella Man, Russell Crowe stayed in a $3,000-a-night chic Mercer hotel. Because of a faulty phone, he couldn't call his wife in Australia. Just after 4AM, the actor and his hotel phone appeared before concierge Nestor Estrada. Words were exchanged and an aggravated Crowe threw the phone, cutting Estrada below his eye. Crowe was taken away in handcuffs and accused of assault and possession of a weapon. He ultimately settled with Estrada for an undisclosed sum estimated in the low six figures. Two days later, he told David Letterman that he had to reach his wife to assure her "I'm in bed, I haven't had too much to drink, and, primarily important, that I'm alone."

Jennifer Aniston lived at the luxe Mandarin Oriental Hotel during the filming of Marley & Me. What really drew headlines was when she was discovered frolicking with John Mayer poolside -- whispering into his ear. The duo, who hadn't gone public with their relationship, were also spotted giggling and holding hands at the hotel's waterfront restaurant, Café Sambal. Other times, the pair got cozy in her 19th-floor sprawling suite, complete with a gourmet kitchen, formal dining room, bamboo floors, balconies accessed from each room, and a designated spa room with killer views of Biscayne Bay.

In 1980, P.T.L. (Praise the Lord) televangelist Rev. Jim Bakker met 21-year-old church secretary Jessica Hahn in room 538 at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort. He said their sexual encounter was consensual. She insisted her wine was drugged and she was raped. A cover up ensued and Bakker offered Hahn $275,000 to keep mum. By 1987, the world would discover the news and star on top of the P.T.L. empire crumbled. Bakker was convicted of defrauding his congregation of $158 million and committing mail and wire fraud and was sent to prison for five years.

For two months during production of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie stayed on and off in the 1,200-square-foot presidential suite at the Pacific Palms Resort in the San Gabriel Valley. The sprawling 650-acre resort is 23 miles from downtown Los Angeles a quarter mile above the street level on the top of a hill. That allowed the couple to go incognito. And since the hotel was pretty under the radar and far enough from the hustle and bustle of LA, the paparazzi was kept well at bay.
