If you just can't face another museum or art gallery, don't worry – there are plenty of options for adventure activity in Berlin to keep you busy. From indoor climbing to bunker tours, there's also enough diversity for adults and kids alike.

1. Berlin Underground

If you're curious about the network of tunnels and bunkers underneath Berlin that are left over from World War II, you can see them first-hand with the Berlin Underworlds Association, which offers select tours in English. This daring adventure activity in Berlin is definitely not for the claustrophobic. Make sure you wear proper footwear (no flip-flops). Taking photographs and filming is forbidden, so instead concentrate on the experience – it's not every day you get to check out a German bunker.

Advance bookings are not possible for single visitors or small groups. You can buy tickets personally from the office from 10AM for same-day tours. The office is just a short walk from Gesundbrunnen subway station.

2. Kletterwald Wuhlheide (Climbing forest Wuhlheide)

The Kletterwald Wuhlheide is an adventure park in Berlin for big kids, complete with flying foxes and treetop platforms. If you fancy yourself as a bit of an action hero or just miss those scouting trips, then this is definitely a great place for family adventure in Berlin. The huge rope obstacle course has challenges at different heights off the ground for kids and adults. You'll find yourself suspended on rope bridges, scaling outdoor climbing walls and swinging like Tarzan from tree to tree. Oh, and keep an eye out for the sled-flying fox.

Please note there are age, height and weight requirements. Minimum age: 7. Minimum height: 4.2 feet. Maximum weight: 286 pounds.

3. Magic Mountain – Indoor Climbing Center

Even if it's raining outside, there are still options for adventure activities in Berlin, including the Magic Mountain indoor climbing center, which is just a short walk from Gesundbrunnen subway station. This purpose-built complex is impressive in its scope. There's a full range of climbing routes, from easy to difficult, a bouldering course and a fitness center, where you can warm up and cool down – and it's included in the entry price. You can lift weights or ride the exercise bikes while watching the other climbers in action. Harnesses and shoes are available for rental onsite.

4. Bicycle Tour Berlin

Another great adventure activity in Berlin is a bicycle tour of the city. You'll definitely see more of it than you would from the window of a train, and the bikes are stylish beach cruisers with comfortable seats. Tour options include Berlin Wall & Cold War, Third Reich / Nazi Germany, and Gardens & Palaces of Potsdam. Highlights from the all-in-one Berlin City Tour include Checkpoint Charlie, Museum Island and the Brandenburg Gate.

Berlin is one of Europe's greenest cities and there are bicycle paths all over the city – so it's much safer to cycle here than in other cities. Tours run rain, hail or shine (except not so regularly in winter – see hours). You can reserve a place in advance online or by phone, or just show up at the meeting spot – the TV Tower next to Alexanderplatz subway station.

5. Air Service Berlin – skydiving, helicopter ride, seaplane

If you've got the flying bug and have a bit of extra cash to burn, then head to the Air Service Berlin for a flying adventure. Choose from a helicopter, hot-air balloon, or "raisin bomber" ride over Berlin. "Raisin bomber" is the affectionate nickname Berliners gave to the Western Allied aircraft that flew in supplies to the western half of Berlin during the Soviet blockade in 1948-9. How's that for adventure travel in Berlin!
