It's one thing to visit Dodge City, Kansas, to experience the Wild West. It's another to hurt yourself doing it.

A 69-year-old Arkansas man caused quite a fright when he passed out in a display noose on a visit to the Boot Hill Museum, officials say.

The visitor's name was not released, but he lost consciousness trying out the museum's "Hanging Tree".

Staffers joined two women helping free the man from the noose, says Lara Brehm, director of the museum. He regained consciousness before being whisked off to the hospital, she says.

The noose usually hangs 15 feet in the air. It was unclear how it came to be low enough for the visitor to try it.

"From what we understand he was using it as a photo opportunity," Brehm says.

She adds the man's feet remained on the ground. "It was not a hanging in the sense that we use that word."

Still, officials have at least temporarily taken down the noose from where it's been for 63 years, since the museum opened.

The man was hospitalized in Wichita, due to "pre-existing conditions."
