Top 10 Places to Work in the Federal Government

The Partnership for Public Service and American University's Institute for the Study of Public Policy Implementation recently released their 5th annual Best Places to Work in the Federal Government rankings. 263,000 employees across 290 federal organizations were surveyed to determine employee satisfaction and commitment. The organizations with the top rankings overall included:

  1. Nuclear Regulatory Commission
  2. Government Accountability Office
  3. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
  4. Smithsonian Institution
  5. National Aeronautics and Space Administration
  6. Social Security Administration
  7. Department of State
  8. General Services Administration
  9. Department of Justice
  10. Intelligence Community

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission also earned top place in employee satisfaction for workers under 40, Asians, African Americans, and Whites and snagged the number one spot for employee satisfaction along the dimensions of work/life balance, pay, and training.

The Government Accountability Office captured top place in employee satisfaction for both males and females as a whole, workers over 40 and Hispanics/Latinos.

While 68% of the organizations surveyed scored higher on employee satisfaction this year over last year, other organizations' satisfaction rankings were notably down including:


  • Department of Veteran Affairs
  • Department of Energy
  • Department of Labor
  • Securities & Exchange Commission
  • Department of Housing & Urban Development
