"Where's the nearest bathroom?" is the third most common question I receive after "Where's Walmart?" and "Know any good places to eat around here?" To help you when nature calls, this guide offers a little expert advice on the best public restrooms in Maui.

When you get "that feeling," you usually begin to scan for the nearest burger joint or gas station, but rarely should these places be your first choice. Not only are such locations notoriously dingy, but many (primarily gas stations) also lack a public restroom. So where do you turn for the best of the best in these moments of need?

Not surprisingly, the best public restrooms in Maui are typically located in the most densely populated areas. Central, South, and West Maui are home to the best public restrooms on the island. The Central Maui town of Kahului tops the list with the most quality bathrooms available to the general public. Here are my recommendations for the best of the best.

Kmart
Address: 424 Dairy Rd., Kahului, HI
Phone: (808) 871-8553
Hours: Daily 7AM-10PM
Number of Men's/Women's Facilities: 2/2
Amenities: Handle/push button flush toilets, foam soap, brown paper towels, trash can near door

Located near the airport, these Maui restrooms provide ample room to "do your business" before or after a long flight. If you're in a rush, head to the first stalls located just inside and to the left of the front doors, across from Little Caesar's Pizza. However, if you have the time for a short stroll, head to the opposite end of the store, where you will find a much larger, less trafficked, well-stocked and impeccably clean set of restrooms so quiet you could read your favorite book cover to cover in peace. As Kmart seems to get fewer visitors than its main competitor, Walmart, you will almost never need to wait for a stall to open up!

Walmart
Address: 101 Pakaula St., Kahului, HI 96732
Phone: (808) 871-7820
Hours: Daily 6AM-11PM
Number of Men's/Women's Facilities: 2/2
Amenities: Motion sensor, auto-flush toilets, liquid soap, semi-soft white paper towels, super cool air conditioning

Located near Kmart, Walmart features one restroom pair situated to the left of the front door and customer service and a second, less frequented pair sandwiched between the baby and electronics departments against the back wall. These bathrooms have a slight advantage over their nearest competitor in presentation. Well-lit and nicely appointed with faux marble flooring and counter tops, these mid-sized restrooms have space for the standard single handicapped stall and multiple regular stalls (or single/single and triple urinal) plus a two or three faucet counter top neatly designed in a wave shape, allowing easier access for little ones and those of smaller stature. Add in generous air conditioning and clean, well-maintained facilities despite the high volume of daily traffic, and you have a solid competitor for the title of the best public restroom in Maui.

Office Max
Address: Maui Marketplace, 270 Dairy Rd., Kahului, HI
Phone: (808) 877-9448
Hours: Mon-Fri 8AM-9PM, Sat 9AM-7PM, Sun 10AM-6PM
Number of Men's/Women's Facilities: 1/1
Amenities: Handle/push button flush toilets, liquid soap, semi-soft brown paper towels

This Maui restroom offers a fantastic level of privacy. Seemingly unknown to all but the employees themselves, the restroom against the back wall at Office Max is another bathroom where you can sit back and relax with your paper in hand. Though on the small side (it offers enough room for a medium handicapped stall and small single stall, plus a second single stall or urinal with a single standard sink), the complete lack of traffic makes up for any shortcomings in size. I myself have sought out this restroom instead of any of the six others in this strip mall, regardless of whether or not I was at the opposite end of the parking lot. It's that good!

Now that you know where to go in Central Maui, where should you go in South Maui? Unfortunately, there are few passable examples on the south side of the island, which is primarily home to supermarkets and fast food chains. There is, however, one public restroom in South Maui that I can highly recommend:

The Shops at Wailea
Address: 3750 Wailea Alanui Dr., Wailea, HI 96753
Phone: (808) 891-6770
Hours: Daily 9:30AM-9PM
Number of Men's/Women's Facilities: 1/1
Amenities: Motion sensor, auto-flush toilets, liquid soap, semi-soft white paper towels, cool air conditioning

Located down a hallway on the ground floor at The Shops at Wailea, this restroom is at first easy to miss, but simply ask one of the helpful store employees, and you'll be well on your way. Compared to say, Walmart, the restrooms at The Shops at Wailea are actually quite plain and simple for their upscale surroundings, but, due to the high standard of the Shops themselves, they are kept virtually spotless and plentifully stocked at all times. Temperatures are kept low to compensate for the blazing sun that often illuminates this open air mall, another huge benefit on a hot and sunny day. As these restrooms are located in a complex of upscale shops, offices, art galleries, and restaurants geared towards the well-to-do resident and tourist, there is a dearth of traffic passing through the standard-sized stalls on most days, always a plus in my book.

Finally, we come to the best public restrooms in West Maui. Once again, there are quite a few terrible to mediocre public restrooms on this side of the island, yet one stands out as one of the best of the best:

Barnes and Noble
Address: 325 Keawe #101, Lahaina, HI 96761
Phone: (808) 662-1300
Hours: Sun-Thu 9AM-10PM, Fri-Sat 9AM-11PM
Number of Men's/Women's Facilities: 1/1
Amenities: Motion sensor, auto-flush toilets, liquid soap, standard white paper towels, cool air conditioning

Another one of the best public restrooms in Maui, this bathroom is located to the left of the store entrance, behind the café and near the romance novels. Barnes and Noble offers a bright, airy, well-appointed restroom that's a cut above what one might find at a rival bookseller. The extra-cool air conditioning in this restroom is fairly standard in large bookstores, but it's a particularly welcome relief when you visit on a typical hot day in Lahaina. Its high level of cleanliness and maintenance combine with its fairly low traffic rate to make this one of the best West Maui public restrooms.
