The City of Brotherly Love is a place with a lot of bars and, thus, a lot of happy hours. Philadelphia also has a lot of well-define neighborhoods, and each boasts its own distinct gathering spots. Here are a few places that offer some of Philadelphia's best happy hour specials. What's more, some of these places also rank among the best lounges, bars and restaurants in Philadelphia.

Center City

McGillin's Olde Ale House
Starts at 5PM
1310 Drury St.
Philadelphia, PA 19107
(215) 735-5562

Best deal: Tuesday $5 pitchers of Bud Light and $0.35 wings

McGillin's is a great local bar on Philadelphia's Drury Street that sports a fun downstairs atmosphere loaded with TVs, a dance floor, music, and lots of places to sit and chill. Upstairs offers a smaller bar area with TVs as well as quieter dining spots. The bar has all the beers you expect, as well as a number of microbrews. It's a must-see in Philly and not only because the food and drinks are among the cheapest in town. The best thing about this oldest continually operated tavern in Philadelphia is that the happy hour prices include good prices on food as well as drinks.

Irish Pub
5PM - 7PM weekdays
1123 Walnut St.
Philadelphia, PA 19107
(215) 925-3311

Best deal: $4-5.50 cocktails, $5-6 glasses of wine, $2 beers

The Irish Pub is one of my favorite Irish establishments. It has plenty of seating in which to enjoy a reasonably priced and very good meal. There are plenty of TVs for those who want to watch any number of sporting events. It's got a great atmosphere all around, with friendly staff and plenty of room. There's also a jukebox if you prefer to listen to music or dance, and a great beer selection. In addition to the location listed above, there's another one on 20th and Walnut. This awesome Philadelphia happy hour runs from 5PM - 7PM, and there are always specials on Rolling Rock and Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Old City

Mad River

5PM - 7PM weekdays
126 Chestnut Street
Philadelphia, PA 19106
(215) 923-5553

Best deal: $3 draft, wine and cocktails and half-priced appetizers

Mad River is a great sports bar that really comes alive during football season. It's the flagship bar to watch Penn State games, and features great specials during those times. There are two floors, so at night there's plenty of room to dance. Mad River has the design and feel of a ski lodge. The lodgey layout works well for this local bar in Philadelphia, with both a cozy atmosphere and a lot of room to move around. There are nightly specials in addition to happy hour, which runs 5 - 7PM.

The Khyber
5PM - 7PM weekdays
56 South 2nd St.
Philadelphia, PA 19106
(215) 238-5888

Best deal: $2 Kenzinger pints Monday through Friday

The Khyber is an excellent bar for those who like live music. Consult their website to see what bands are going to be performing and for pricing. The Khyber has the feel of a dive bar without really being one. It's not as nice looking and trendy as most of the trendier cocktail bars in this part of Philadelphia, but that just adds to its charm. Try going there once...if it's not for you, at least you'll know. But if you like it, you'll be back there many times. Happy hour specials run Monday through Friday and include $2 pints of Kenzinger, $1 domestic beer in bottles and $1 off all other drinks.

University City

Mad Mex
4:30PM - 6:30PM weekdays
3401 Walnut St.
Philadelphia, PA 19104
(215) 382-2221

Best deal: $7 Big Margaritas

Mad Mex is a great Mexican bar located near Penn and Drexel. It has both indoor and outdoor areas and the margaritas are some of the best around. The food is high quality for a bar. Max Mex is not for dancing or music but IS a great place to unwind during happy hour in Philadelphia, especially on a sunny day. Happy hour at Mad Mex runs from 4:30PM - 6:30PM weekdays and includes $7 "Big Margaritas," $3 12-ounce margaritas, $5 16-ounce margaritas and half off draft beers and wings. Be sure to try the many margarita flavors they have.

South Street

Paddy Whacks Irish Sports Pub
5PM - 7PM weekdays
150 South St.
Philadelphia, PA 19147
(215) 464-7544

Best deal: $3 Guinness, $2 domestic drafts

Paddy Whacks is a big, comfortable Irish bar and restaurant. It has some of the best sports specials in town, and plenty of room to watch the games. The food is an incredible mix of American and Irish. It's in a great neighborhood of Philadelphia, so after happy hour, which runs from 5PM - 7PM and includes half-priced appetizers in addition to the drink specials, be sure to explore the area. Additionally, good local bands take over this Philadelphia bar's stage during happy hour all weekend long.

Manayunk

JD McGillicuddy's
6PM - 8PM weekdays
111 Cotton St.
Philadelphia, PA 19127
(215) 930-0209

Best deal: half price drafts, bottles, drinks and appetizers

JD McGillicuddy's is located right near the train station in Manayunk, making it very accessible. It has some outdoor seating and dining downstairs, with more of a club atmosphere upstairs. The drinks are reasonably priced, and the food is really good. There's not as much of an Irish atmosphere as there is at other bars, but it's a great place to meet people and always has a good crowd without being too overcrowded. Happy hour at this Philadelphia-area bar is Monday through Friday 6PM - 8PM and includes half off drafts, drinks and appetizers.

The Bayou
6PM - 8PM weekdays
4245 Main St.
Philadelphia, PA 19127
(215) 482-2560

Best deal:
$1 "you-call-it" happy hour on Fridays

The Bayou is a fantastic, Philadelphia-area bar that's big with the local crowd in Manayunk. With plenty of TVs and a very friendly staff, it's one of the best places in town to watch the Philadelphia teams on TV. The cocktails are always cheap, and beers are usually $3 or less at all times. The food is decent and affordable. The Bayou has a big bar area and dining room upstairs as well as two areas upstairs, so there's plenty of room to relax with friends at the end of a long day.
