Best Public Restrooms in Charlottesville
As a father of two young children, I never know when the most terrifying four words are going to escape my daughter's mouth: "I have to pee." Once those words are uttered, it's a mad dash to find the closest restroom suitable for a princess's hind end. As a result, we have seen the best and the worst public restrooms in Charlottesville, VA. Unfortunately, the restrooms at the beautiful city parks leave much to be desired, and the lack of public restrooms in downtown is equally disappointing. If you follow these recommendations, though, you'll easily find the best Charlottesville restrooms.
When you're in a bind, head to the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library in Charlottesville. Restrooms here are nothing fancy, but they're some of the best. They are always clean, and no one hassles you for simply using the facilities – a definite plus. If you're so inclined, take advantage of the ample reading material available.
Hours: Mon-Thu 9AM-9PM, Fri-Sat 9AM-5PM, Sun 1PM-5PM (closed Sundays Memorial Day to Labor Day)
Jefferson-Madison Regional Library, 201 E. Market St., Charlottesville, VA 22902, (434) 979-7151
The McDonald's on the corner of Preston Ave. and Ridge McIntire Rd. is also an attractive option. What I like about this facility is, like most McDonald's, the restroom is out of the way. There is no need to stroll by the counter, which allows you to slip in virtually unnoticed, avoiding the awkward glances from staff and patrons.
Hours: Daily 5:30AM -11PM (drive-thru is open all night)
McDonald's, 271 Ridge McIntire Rd., Charlottesville, VA 22903, (434) 977-2984
Surprisingly, one of the absolute best public bathrooms in Charlottesville is at the transit station on the east end of the downtown pedestrian mall. This is one truly unique facility. First and foremost, it is always immaculately clean. Impressive features such as the self-flushing toilets and automatic hand dryers optimize hygiene by allowing for a completely hands-free experience. These facilities also make use of gravity, thermo-energy, and water conserving toilets that add an attractive "going-green" feature that I find particularly refreshing.
Hours: Mon-Sat 8AM-8PM, Sun 9AM-5PM
Downtown Transit Station, 615 E. Water St., Charlottesville, VA 22902, (434) 970-3649
What is most impressive about the transit station, McDonald's, and Jefferson-Madison Regional Library restrooms is their family-friendly atmosphere. All have changing tables and enough room to effortlessly maneuver a stroller or a squirmy preschooler. With the transit station located at the east end of the pedestrian mall, McDonald's at the west end, and the library in the middle, you'll have access to a suitable restroom, no matter where you are in the city.
