Where there are co-eds, there are happy hours and, with Arizona State University (ASU) spreading out over both Phoenix and nearby Tempe, the greater Phoenix area offers a number of great options for happy hours. Even better, all the places listed here are situated along the city's new light rail system.

St. Francis

Happy Hour: 4PM-6PM
111 E. Camelback Road
Phoenix, AZ 85012
602-200-8111
Light rail stop: Camelback/Central

Best deal: Free bar snacks 4PM-6PM

Foodies and locavores love St. Francis for its super fresh, local and frequently changing menu of wood-fired food, but just about anyone can appreciate free bar snacks (we're not talking just nuts here) and bang-up deals on drinks in its re-purposed historic building. Happy hour drink prices in this Phoenix bar are in effect all day until 6PM, which means you can enjoy $10 carafes of red or white wine, $3 draft beers and $5 cocktails during their "Business Lunch" (three courses in less than 30 minutes for $18). The Almond Margarita and Meyer Lemonade are both original and unique.

Postino Winecafé
Happy Hour: 11AM - 5PM
5144 N. Central Ave.
Phoenix, AZ 85012
602-274-5144
Light rail stop: Camelback/Central

Best deal: $5 pitchers of premium beers

It's a good thing this place is near the light rail, because fine wine and beer aficionados may find it hard not to overindulge in their favorite imports at prices like these. The usual deal is $5 glasses of wine and $5 pitchers of Hoegaarden, Odell IPA, Four Peaks Kilt Lifter and Kronenbourg 1664.

Cheuvront's Restaurant & Wine Bar
4PM - 6PM weekdays
1326 N. Central Ave.
Phoenix, AZ 85004
(602) 307-0022
Light rail stop: McDowell/Central

Best deal: $5 appetizers and pizzas

The food at this French restaurant actually competes with the fare overseas, but it's the staggeringly good happy hour prices that really set it apart. Cheuvront's is trendy and upscale to the point of intimidating, but the servers are anything but snobby and the happy hour plates are to die for. Appetizers are about half-price at $5. So are the pizzas, which come with suggested wine pairings -- glasses only $4 -- and eclectic toppings such as sun-dried tomatoes, artichoke hearts, goat cheese and pesto. Martinis and mojitos are only $5 as well.

Rúla Búla

2PM- 6PM Monday through Saturday, 2PM-close Sundays
401 South Mill Ave.
Tempe, AZ 85281
(480) 929-9500
Light rail stop: Mill Avenue/3rd Street

Best deal: $3 for 16-ounce beers

An Irish pub that seems to attract only the most civilized ASU coeds, Rúla Búla offers small appetizer plates (mostly fried-food menu) for $2.75-3.50 during Happy Hour. The warm and friendly staff, jovial atmosphere and decor dedicated to Irish points of pride such as Arkel, the racehorse, and a certain dark beer make it an enjoyable place for perfectly crisp $5 fish 'n' chips. If you're not a Guinness fan, Harp and Smithwick's are also on tap for $3 per 16-ounce glass. Monday nights from 9PM to close the pub offers 2-for-1 drinks for service and retail workers.

Zuma Grill
3PM- 7PM Monday through Friday
605 S. Mill Ave.
Tempe, AZ 85281
(480) 829-6775
Light rail stop: Mill Avenue/3rd Street

Best deal: $2.50 for beers on tap

With $4 appetizers and $5 burger baskets that don't taste like typical bar fare and beers on tap at only $2.50 each, Zuma is worth stopping by during happy hour, before it's overtaken by the worst in ASU stereotypes. Zuma is shaped like a rectangle, deep once you walk in but hard to get through if it's crowded as there's not a lot of space between the comfy banquettes and the bar. This is one happy hour where I recommend sitting at a table -- the booths are fun and in such close proximity to the bar that it's the best of both worlds.

Sushi 101

4PM-7PM and after 9PM daily
920 E. University Drive
Tempe, AZ 85281
(480) 317-0101
Light rail stop: University/Rural

Best deal: Sushi rolls starting at $2.50

It's pretty hard to go to Sushi 101 when it's not happy hour, as there is just a two-hour window before "reverse happy hour" begins. Though you might expect an entirely co-ed crowd since it's so close to ASU's Tempe campus, there's actually a good blend of people. It's never empty but rarely packed and always mellow. During happy hour, most rolls are $2.50 to $5.50 each. I recommend the Crunchy California roll, which single-handedly inspired my love of tempura flakes.
