Ace of Space: 4 Winter Wardrobe Solutions

Before you go, we thought you'd like these...
ace of space, poetas, Flickr, coatsThe summer heat is still on, but before you know it the winter cold will be here. So this is the perfect time of year to organize and weed out your winter wardrobe. After you've purged your closet, you should have more space to hang your clothing. But if you're like most apartment dwellers you might need a little extra space for big bulky items like sweaters and coats.

Let's take a look at a few free-standing storage solutions.

1. Storage cubes

Harri Koskinen's beautifully designed birch storage cubes would be perfect in my apartment. But they are quite expensive and aren't very feasible for those of us on a budget. However, the IKEA Molger series has a number of cool bench and storage stools that are inexpensive.

2. Vintage luggage or suitcases

Incorporating vintage luggage or suitcases into freestanding storage units is one way to store seasonal items like gloves, sweaters, and coats.

3. A skinny free-standing closet or dresser

Typically, small dwellings don't have a lot of built in closet space. But there are a plethora of freestanding closets and drawers that you can incorporate into your small space. Apartment Therapy has an excellent roundup of wardrobe solutions.

Some of these options are pricey. But the photos will give you good ideas of what to look for at your local thrift store. And if you're really crafty you can make your own wardrobe.

4. A few good coat racks

I'm loving the Dots Wood Coat Hook by Norwegian design studio Tveit & Tornoe. Apartment Therapy points out, "The simplicity of the grouping of five round pegs makes an excellent, minimal coat rack. We'd love to see these in a small entry way, or even on the wall next to a door."

I agree!
