Portland Hotel Makes Own Whiskey

A hotel in Portland, Oregon, can brag about much more than its luxury decor and bedding. The Nines hotel also serves its own artisanal whiskey

Urban Farmer, the modern steakhouse at the downtown hotel, which opened in 2008, is a strong proponent of local dining. And as an extension of that, the property collaborated with Lee Medoff of House Spirits Distillery to become a player in Oregon's craft distilling scene.

Aged and bottled on-site, Barrel #2 of Urban Farmer Whiskey, the hotel restaurant's second bottling, is now being poured. A third bottling is to be released in August. Barrel #2 was aged in a New American Oak barrel 18 months and comes in at 98.9 proof. Barrel #3 will have aged 23 months.

"It is perfect for sipping, with dark brown sugar evolving into caramel and licorice with hints of lime and cinnamon on the palette," officials said.

A glass of Barrel #2 is $12 from the Urban Farmer bar.

The hotel also produces its own "Moonshine," with a mash bill of 80% Rye and 20% malted barley, and a shot runs $9.

Summer rates at The Nines hotel, which is part of the Luxury Collection of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, are from $179 per night.
