Paul DeLuca was a Chief Operating Officer seeking a new position. His long career had all been in one industry and he was having trouble getting noticed by hiring managers in new sectors. What type of position was Paul targeting?
Paul was seeking an executive-level leadership position for an entire company rather than a division. Although well-versed and proven in the areas of manufacturing, he wanted to remain open to all industries, including government contracting companies.
What were the obstacles Paul faced in his search?
Paul's experience was very specific to the manufacturing sector. He needed a resume that opened him up to various private and government contracting opportunities. He had a rich 25+ career history and his early experience with the FBI was important to show since he was seeking opportunities with a government contractor but we wanted to show his early experience in a way that didn't blatantly "date" him.
What strategies were used to make Paul memorable?
Highlighting Paul's key attributes was imperative to making him memorable. Summarizing his key abilities as subtitles at the top (Building Corporate Value, Operations, Restructuring, Juris Doctor of Law) immediately identifies what Paul brings to the table. In addition to the subtitles we highlighted his multi-lingual capabilities and his executive management and intelligence career - all imperative to government contracting work. We also highlighted his early FBI career managing and planning intelligence operations and his former security clearance status. His FBI experience was documented under a separate section and cumulative years rather than employment dates were used the keep the focus off when the position was held.
How did you prove the impact Paul made on past employers?
We bulleted his key accomplishments for each employer and used hard-core metrics to demonstrate his value. We also documented awards he had received.
What have been the results of the new resume?
Paul's self-written resume produced four interviews within three months. After Paul had his resume professionally written, he obtained 12 interviews in two months.
