Gawker reported that a security breach in AT&T's (T) network exposed the e-mail addresses of 114,000 Apple (AAPL) iPad owners, some of whom are well-know business executives. The gossip website said:
"The breach, which comes just weeks after an Apple employee lost an iPhone prototype in a bar, exposed the most exclusive email list on the planet, a collection of early-adopter iPad 3G subscribers that includes thousands of A-listers in finance, politics and media, from New York Times Co. CEO Janet Robinson to Diane Sawyer of ABC News to film mogul Harvey Weinstein to Mayor Michael Bloomberg. It even appears that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel's information was compromised."
AT&T admitted the problem in its own statement:
AT&T was informed by a business customer on Monday of the potential exposure of their iPad ICC IDs [used to authenticate the subscriber on AT&T's network]. The only information that can be derived from the ICC IDs is the e-mail address attached to that device. This issue was escalated to the highest levels of the company and was corrected by Tuesday; and we have essentially turned off the feature that provided the e-mail addresses.

The person or group who discovered this gap did not contact AT&T. We are continuing to investigate and will inform all customers whose e-mail addresses and ICC IDs may have been obtained. At this point, there is no evidence that any other customer information was shared. We take customer privacy very seriously and while we have fixed this problem, we apologize to our customers who were impacted.
The problem is likely to cause more tension between Apple and AT&T. Problems with the telecom company's 3G network has undermined iPhone service for several months.
