Top Paying Work-From-Home Jobs
Working from home sounds alluring to many people – keep your own hours, work in your jammies...what's not to like? Fortunately, thanks in large part to the Internet, a growing number of well-paid jobs can be done from home.
One of the biggest work-from-home trends is major employers "homesourcing" their workforce, including professionals in many well-paid fields. Top reasons include the need to retain key employees who want more family time, says Kate Lister, co-author of Undress for Success: The Naked Truth About Making Money at Home.
Even the downturn hasn't put a damper on the home-based work trend. The number of people who reported they mostly work from home rose 39 percent from 2006 to 2008, the U.S. Census found.
"Some people thought home-based work would shrink because people feared the lack of visibility during the downturn," she says. "But that hasn't proven true."
Here's a look at some of the best-paid jobs you can do at home:
1. Psychiatrist ($168,000)
Many a psychiatrist sees patients from a home office, says Al Lee, director of quantitative analysis for the salary-research firm PayScale. Like medical doctors, psychiatrists' training is extensive – the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes psychiatrists usually have a bachelor's degree, four years of medical school and several additional years as a medical resident.

2. Arabic translator ($87,000)
The rise of Islamic terrorism has meant a boom in the need for Arabic speakers, says Lee. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports about one-quarter of translators are self-employed. Other translators also earn well, but right now Arabic is the best-paid language, a recent PayScale study showed.

3. 3-D artist ($60,300)
If you've seen World of Warcraft or other massive multiplayer online games, you know there's a growing need for artists who can create characters and backdrops for these imaginary realms. Talented young workers may bootstrap their way into the field, but increasingly companies want 3-D artists to have a two- or four-year degree, with courses in computer design, technical drawing and animation, the site Education-Portal.com reports. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the field to grow 16 percent from 2006-2016.

4. Animator ($59,500)
Once a 3-D artist creates a character, an animator is needed with the skills to make the character move, notes Lee. Education usually includes a bachelor's degree and job prospects are similar to those of the computer artists, BLS notes.

"All of these workers – 3-D artist, animator and Web developer – tend to be work-from-home because they're all project-based," Lee says. "A game is coming out and they need to animate some characters and get them online – then it's on to the next project."
6. Freelance technical writer($57,100)
Technical writers document product specifications and create instruction manuals for customers. They usually have a background in a technical field such as software development.
