More Fun With Online Interior Design: Decomash

Before you go, we thought you'd like these...
decomashFinding furniture and accessories that compliment your home's color palette is only a click away, thanks to a new interior design site launched last month. With Decomash, wannabe designers can click on the color and genre of their choice and receive perfectly color-coordinated matches that span a wide variety of styles.

"You can easily upload a picture of a room, and Decomash will find and display complementary decorations and artwork," says Decomash co-founder Wai Lee. "Or you could upload inspirational pictures, like beaches or sunsets, and search for home décor or wall art related to the themes of those images.

"People crave the ability to find home decorating ideas in an instant. That is where Decomash comes in."

The bonus is that if you're not sure what exactly will match your home, you can upload a photo of the room and Decomash will generate matching pieces for you, along with links to where you can order them.

Of course there are some problems. First and foremost, it's hard to ensure that the color on your screen exactly matches the one in your home. Order something that's even one shade off and your room could come off as clashy rather than classy.

Second, the site is fairly limited in terms of product. To give Decomash a test drive, I searched for pieces to compliment the dark blue interior of my living room and only came up with 25 pieces of art, no furnishings and 7 rugs, one of which depicted smiling children holding a banner that read "Welcome to the Library." (Hey, Decomash, not so much my style!)

Decomash is just the latest company to venture into online interior design. In April we also reviewed iSearchDécor, a site that matches your home furnishing needs with local off-the-beaten-path vendors. Despite the fact that iSearchDecor is limited to the Phoenix, Ariz. area, its business model seems to be a little more on target, since there's an option to receive online help from iSearch designers.

We also have showed you an iPhone app called Furnish My Photo. While both Decomash and Furnish My Photo offer users the ability to upload a photo in order to get a virtual sense of design for their space, Decomash focuses on color coordination and style. The iPhone app will eventually offer over 5 million items to place in your virtual domain. In other words, they both have their plus sides!

Despite Decomash's shortcomings, it's still a good place to get ideas. While hunting around for a chaise lounge for my living room, I came across a few throw pillows and contemporary rugs that I probably wouldn't have considered if they weren't placed side by side with a photo of my home.

It's fast and there are some gems in the mix, but the site doesn't yet have the appropriate search functions to let you get to them quickly and efficiently.
