Calls made to the Attorney General's complaint line started the investigation, said Ohio AG office spokeswoman Kim Kowalkski. "We followed up and found that in these cases, legal action was necessary," she said.

Cases of the eight companies the Ohio AG says violated the Consumer Sales Practices Act are either in pending lawsuits, or were assessed default judgment if the company did not respond to the alleged charge. According to Kowalski, the AG's office requested restitution from the companies.

Cases are pending against Custom Touch Remodel, Backyard Oasis/Royal Spa, Hometown Improvement Inc, C&W Concrete, Scott Goodin Heating and Cooling and Shawn Fleming Snowplowing and Shawn Fleming Roofing.

Consumers can still file complaints about these and other home improvement companies to the Attorney General's office and may still be eligible for restitution in some cases, Kowalski said.

She noted, "We generally always receive more complaints this time of year when people are doing home improvement projects."

The Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to interview all potential contractors and check references.
