American to Boost Flights, Promote Tourism in NYC

The heated competition over New York City air travel reached a new level this week with the announcement that American Airlines would be adding new flights from the city, revamping its terminals at LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports, and teaming with the New York City tourism bureau to promote travel to the city.

American Airlines has traditionally been a favorite airline carrier for New York City, which is the largest air travel market in the US, but has recently had to contend with a spate of new Delta flights and a series of discount airlines joining the competition such as AirTran, Spirit, Virgin Atlantic, and Southwest Airlines.

In an effort to regain a competitive edge in the NYC market, American Airlines will add 23 new flights to seven new destinations from JFK and LaGuardia airports by the end of 2010. The airline will also invest $8 million dollars in a two-year marketing campaign with NYC & Company, Inc. to bolster tourism in metropolitan New York, which brings in an estimated 45 million visitors a year.

On top of this, American Airlines has entered into a partnership with JetBlue by pairing 18 domestic flights to New York City with international flights from the city, and agreeing to a slot swap that will add another 12 daily flights at JFK. This partnership with JetBlue mirrors a recent move by Delta, which plans to add another 100 flights a day in New York through a deal with US Airways to trade landing and takeoff rights at LaGuardia and Reagan Washington National airports, according to USA Today.
