Las Vegas has the nation's most affordable hotel rooms, according to a recent survey by Hotels.com.

According to the company's Hotel Price Index, a survey performed twice annually that provides an overview of hotel rates around the globe, Las Vegas hotels cost an average of $79/night. The rate showcases a decrease of 18 percent, with 2008 prices coming in at $96/night.

Sin City also topped the list as the most popular destination for domestic travelers, and came in second only to New York City for those traveling internationally.

Despite its popularity, the sinking economy has caused the city to see a drastic reduction in conventions, leading to empty hotel rooms and lowered prices.

Among the highest priced cities are Boston at $158/night and Honolulu at $160/night. New York topped the list as the most expensive city, with an average nightly rate of $199/night, despite a 24 percent decline in rates since last year.

The list was formed from data compiled between July and December 2009, and is based on bookings made through Hotels.com.
