Spherion started in 1946 as a company providing temporary labor to unload cars at Chicago auto dealerships. According to the company's Web site, founder Leroy Dettman expanded to general temporary labor "with the vision to 'connect the right employee with the right business at the right time.' "
Spherion has grown to a franchised permanent and temporary staffing firm with offices in the United States and Canada and 300,000-plus employees. Spherion has more than 2,000 recruiters, and over 8,000 clients, "including small, mid-market & 90 percent of the Fortune 100" according to the company's website, and is the sixth-largest U.S. staffing firm.
Spherion's local offices are primarily franchises. The company maintains numerous franchise or company-owned offices in major metro areas, and offices in most mid-sized metro areas. Spherion focuses on larger clients, but tends not to office recruiters on-site at client offices.
Spherion offers temporary, contract-to-hire, and permanent placement services. The company describes its staffing model as a three-step process:
1) Understand – Meet with client to understand requirements
2) Screen – Phone or in-person interviews, skills testing, soft skills assessment, checking backgrounds, drug testing, checking references
3) Deploy – Candidates who pass Spherion's screening process are either assigned to projects or added to the database
Spherion offers a wide range of benefits, which may vary depending on position and location. Spherion offers e-learning to temp employees and candidates, from its Web-based training solution titled Learn It! Online.
