Another mid-century modern trophy home is up for grabs in Los Angeles -- this time for the hair-raising price of $17.5 million, according to Real Estalker.

The seller is none other than Vidal Sassoon, the former hair-care mogul, and his wife Rhonda, who apparently missed my recent post about price deflation for MCM masterpieces.

They should know however about how tough the market is: Another Sassoon residence, the Richard Neutra-designed Singleton House, off Mulholland Drive in Los Angeles (left), has been on the market for more than two years and its price has been knocked down to $14.9 million from an original asking price of $19.9 million.

His new listing is a 6,000-plus-square-foot Hal Levitt-designed gem in Beverly Hills that was once owned by the sister of the late Shah of Iran, who supposedly covered the floors in purple shag carpet, the Real Estalker says.

One commenter recalls that the house was the scene of riots by Iranian students, who tried to burn the place down when they learned that the Shah's relatives were living there.

Perhaps the Sassoon provenance will prove more appealing.

After all, besides being a renowned hair stylist and businessman (Sassoon sold his salons and hair-care line years ago), he's an architecture buff and modernist fan: he told Vogue UK that Bauhaus design had inspired his geometric cuts from the 60s. Not surprisingly, the low-slung Levitt house features great MCM details: from acres of glass walls to a motor court, and of course, this being L.A., a pool.

We don't know why he's selling both of his MCM homes. Mid-century modern is still popular, of course, but the question is whether the 82-year old Sassoon can get his price, or anything near it, in a rough market with lots of inventory and bargain hunting buyers.

Crosby Doe, a seasoned MCM realtor in L.A., who is not involved with the sale, tells us that the upper-range price he's asking is "optimistic but not impossible," given the premier location and design. Good luck.
