Apple's iPhone Is 2009's Most Popular Mobile Phone

Apple's (AAPL) iconic iPhone was the most popular single mobile device in 2009, but Research in Motion's (RIMM) BlackBerry models and LG's product line also performed well, according to new data released by Nielsen. In fact, taken together, the various BlackBerry and LG models outsold the iPhone, which comes in just one model.%%DynaPub-Enhancement class="enhancement contentType-HTML Content fragmentId-1 payloadId-61603 alignment-right size-small"%%Still, the results illustrate what an astonishing success Apple's iPhone has been. Its performance is all the more impressive since the device is available on only one carrier, AT&T (T).

The results do not include any devices powered by Android, Google's (GOOG) open-source mobile operating system, most notably Motorola's (MOT) well-reviewed Droid phone, available on Verizon Wireless, which was released this fall. But next year, as Android adoption picks up with a slate of new devices, Google will clearly want to see one of those devices crack the top 10 for Android to be considered a success.


For 2009, Apple 3G iPhone grabbed the number one spot with a 4% "embedded base of all subscribers," a measure of market share. The BlackBerry 8300 Series, which includes the Curve, 8310, 8320, 8330, and 8350i models, came in second with 3.7% percent, while the Motorola RAZR V3 series, which includes the V3, V3c, V3m, V3i, V3i DG, came in third with 2.3%.

LG locked up the fourth and fifth slots with its LG VX9100 (2.1%) and LG Voyager (1.7%). Blackberry and LG models claimed four of the remaining five slots to close out the top 10.

What Sites Do All Those Phones Use Most?

Google, Yahoo (YHOO) and YouTube were the most popular Web destinations accessed on mobile devices in 2009, according to Nielsen's survey.

Google's search engine led all websites accessed by mobile phones, while Yahoo Mail came in second, followed by Gmail, the Weather Channel's website, Facebook, MSN Hotmail, Google Maps, ESPN, AOL Email (run by DailyFinance's parent), and CNN News.

In a separate list measuring the top 10 brands accessed on mobile phones, Yahoo took the top spot, followed by Google, Microsoft properties, AOL properties, the Weather Channel, Facebook, CNN sites, Fox sites, ESPN and Apple.

Finally, Nielson tabulated the top mobile video channels, a list that featured -- no surprise here -- YouTube as the number one channel. Fox sites came in second, followed by the Weather Channel, Comedy Central, CBS, ABC, MTV, NBC, EXPN and E!, the entertainment network.
