Candy corn and other treats have already started rolling into stores, and instead of playing trick or treat a month early, we decided to use that energy to find some of the best free Halloween games on the Web. After weeding through dozens of titles, we found eight -- everything from hidden object to arcade-style beat-em-ups -- that will get you in the mood for one of the most raucous nights of the year.

Halloween Bubble

Game Type:
Match-3, Puzzle
Spooky Factor: Seeing Martha Stewart in costume is 700x scarier.

In this simple, but fun Halloween-themed game shoot and match faces of the same color to make them disappear. The goal is to get rid of all of the faces before they reach the ground. It's not the most sophisticated game in the world, but this will easily eat up 15-20 minutes of your time before you know what happened.

Square Meal
By Nitrome

Game Type: Puzzle, Action
Spooky Factor: It's 'cuepy' -- totally cute and only slightly creepy.

This game stars an adorable green munster who finds itself trapped in a dungeon. Help him escape by moving and shooting blocks at (and then eating) enemies. The controls are simple: use the arrow keys to move in four directions and hit the space bar to stick your tongue out and eat! Two people can also play at the same time using the same keyboard (the second player uses the WASD keys to move and CTRL to eat).

Headless Havoc

Game Type: Action
Spooky Factor: This ranks as about a 3.7 on the spooky Richter scale.

Headless Havoc pays homage to the classic Legend of Sleepy Hollow tale, where you play as a headless horsemen who races through the foggy night doing what he does best -- lopping the heads off his victims. The goal: decapitate as many people as possible on your nighttime ride, which is harder than it sounds. If the little guys in suits would stand still, it would be so much easier.

Zombie Farm

By Shen Games

Game Type: Simulation
Spooky Factor: You play for the zombies, who's scared now?

Build a zombie army and send them into infest small mountain towns and skyscraper-filled cities. Win the battle, you'll gather more shuffling soldiers for your pack; lose a battle, then start the game over from scratch.

By Dank

Game Type: Puzzle, Action
Spooky Factor: Only slightly spookier than watching Bewitched reruns on TV Land.

Use the arrow keys to guide the flying witch to candy floating in the air, while avoiding hazards like bats and ghosts. Hurry and collect as much as you can before Halloween is over!

Spooky Spider Hunter

Game Type: Hidden Object
Spooky Factor: Our spider-phobic senses were tingling.

We've played far more sophisticated hidden object games, but were sufficiently creeped out hunting for spiders (bleech!) hiding in slightly creepy photos of haunted-looking houses, graveyards and other bleak scenery. There's 100 spiders (some black, some white) to find in all, and while it's relatively simple, it's a good way to kill a few minutes in between class, meetings or cooking up some witches' brew.

Game Type: Shooter
Spooky Factor: Monsters, coming ... can't shoot ... fast enough....\

In this classic arcade-style shoot-em-up, aim, then click the mouse button rapidly to blow away advancing ghoulies. The scariest part of this game? Playing it for too long in one sitting might give you a killer case of carpal tunnel.

Vox Populi, Vox Dei (A Werewolf Thriller)

Game Type: Action, Arcade
Spooky Factor: Pixelated werewolves, pixelated blood, need we say more?

Embark on a bloody mission to rescue a girl from a werewolf infestation. Use the arrow keys to move and the space bar to jump. To attack werewolves, approach them when they're not looking and then hit the down key and space bar to attack; keep holding the space bar until the werewolf disappears, leaving nothing but a puddle of pixelated gore.
