5 Simple Ways to Make Your Apartment Greener
Doing your part to combat climate change or preserve natural resources? You can, even in an apartment.
Here are five simple things you can do to save yourself money and make your apartment greener, too.
High Energy Light Bulbs (CFLs)
You might ask, "Isn't everyone doing this by now?" No, but you should because installing CFL bulbs will last longer. More importantly, they will help reduce your energy use and associated costs. Do it now so you're not the last person on the block to make the switch.
Strip, Baby, Strip!
Make a habit of unplugging unused electrical equipment. Cell phones, computers, digital cameras, and other household items use energy even when they are turned off. Simplify the process by purchasing a power strip.
Kick the Chemicals
Behold, an amazing secret: you can make your own all-purpose cleaner by mixing 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon liquid soap or detergent, and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. If you want to get fancy you can add a few drops of essential oil for a pleasant smell. You'll avoid adding chemicals to our water supply and enjoy significant savings, too.
Make the Mailman Miss You
Reduce or eliminate unwanted junk mail, and, mail from previous tenants. Sign up for a service like Tonic Mailstopper. They will take you off the major mailing lists. No more mail for the guy who moved out in 1999!
Show the 'Lord (Landlord) Some Love
Nothing piques a landlord's ears more than reduced costs and increased property values. If you have a great idea to install a green roof, purchase more efficient appliances, upgrade to a low-flow toilet, or other suggestion, appeal to these desires. Write up a proposal showing the money saved and the bottom-line benefits. Have other tenants sign your proposal for added motivational "oomph."
